Laying a Blog

So I was talking to Bump the other day about blogging. He's of the mind that a good blog should be critical and analytical or amusing or whatever and blogs about every day life generally aren't worth reading. Which brings up two interesting topics, firstly the blogs I read and secondly the blog I write.

I read a few different blogs, not as many as some but enough for me. Tucker Max, Azrael, and Mil Millington are all a mix of the funny and life, because the funny is their life. Whereas Maddox writes straight out vitriolic humour. I don't think there's a lot of what he's really like as a person in that there blog. It's a bit like Jay Pinkerton in that respect which is fine because I read them both for the funny more than anything else.

Websnark is the blog which updates the most and thus the one I read the most. Eric Burns is mostly noted for his critical analysis of comics, games, pop-culture and general... stuff. Outside of that he sometimes talks about his everyday life too. It's not really the focus of Websnark but I do enjoy hearing about his life. I also read a blog that's just about general life and I enjoy it too because it's well written, but by choice I wouldn't read a large number of that style of blog because after all variety is the spice of life.

So far in writing my own blog I've talked about lots of random crap and enjoyed doing it too. It's possible that I could change from the way I write now to a more Eric Burns essay writing style or the Tycho Brahe bring the hilarity while still saying important things style or Tucker/Azrael talk about my life in a funny way style. But the truth is I just want to enjoy writing and if other people enjoy reading what I enjoy writing then that's a bonus.

I heard this guy talking about a rap cd that bombed. The rapper what made the CD said "I made that one for myself" and the guys response was "bullshit man, if you make a record for yourself then keep it to yourself. The minute you put it out there you're trying to sell it to someone else." And I feel that the same could be said of me if I try to justify writing however I want just because I enjoy it. This isn't a cop out, I'm still going to try and improve myself and I'm still writing for an audience I'm just trying to do it the best way I know how.

There will be more critical essays as I get more time to write them and more time to spend playing games, watching tv or doing anything else that might generate the need for critical essay writing. There will be more because I enjoy writing them and I enjoy reading them and because I want to be better at writing them than I am now. But there will be random crap also and it will rule.
