I've been reading Megatokyo for a while now and like many people I preferred the writing when Largo was still involved. Having said that I still read the comic anyway. But I've been interested in finding out the cause of their split for a while now. While on my random meanderings today I happened to be looking at the Wikipedia entry for Rodney Caston aka Largo. The entry provided links to both Fred and Rodney's version of events. They're fairly close the only difference being that Fred said Largo had wanted to end the comic before Fred gave him an ultimatum. Take a lump sum or the comic gets it.
What struck me was not so much the ultimatum itself but people's reactions: "It's just business"
So fucking what? Does that make it any less wrong to screw people over? Not that I think Fred completely screwed Rodney, after all they were having artistic differences and Rodney wasn't contributing much to the comic any more (whether it was by choice or otherwise doesn't really matter much). Something had to change. By the sounds of it Fred did his best to compensate Rodney although we'll never really know will we? (non-disclosure agreement).
It's interesting to me because my comic as I've mentioned multiple times was really a collaborative project and given the choice I would have Manny back in on it in a second. But what if I work hard for years and the project becomes successful and he asks for his piece of the pie? What do I say? When does it become my project and not our project?
When Manny left I asked him if I could go ahead without him and he had no problem with it. I need to stop feeling guilty for doing this without him.
